Mathematics is important in everyday life. It is integral to all aspects of life and with this in mind we endeavour to ensure that children develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them.
Mathematics helps children to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives. Through their growing knowledge and understanding, children learn to appreciate the contribution made by many cultures to the development and application of mathematics
The school aims to:
The school follows the recommended National Curriculum programmes of study using White Rose Maths and NCETM as tools for planning.
This guidance has been taken from the White Rose Calculation Policy. It is a working document written as a guide to indicate the progression through Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division in all year groups.
Vocabulary is an important element of our lessons, children are taught mathematical language in each year group. Vocabulary is built upon, year on year to show progression.
Each class from Y1- Y6 use a 'Flashback 4' as part of their daily maths lesson. This tool helps to recap prior learning from the day before, the week before and the unit before. This consolidation enables the children to revisit topics and address any gaps in learning.
This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.
